Our Basic Medical Care Missionary Tour offers a perfect blend of service and safari. Spend three
days providing essential health services to Maasai communities in the Amboseli region, followed
by an exhilarating safari through three of Kenya's most iconic national parks: Amboseli, Tsavo West, and Tsavo East. This tour is designed for medical professionals and volunteers who want to contribute their skills while also experiencing the natural wonders of East Africa.
Your Basic Medical Care Missionary Tour begins as you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Our representatives will greet you with traditional Kenyan hospitality and transfer you to your city hotel. After settling in, embark on a city orientation tour, exploring Nairobi's Central Business District. You'll view key landmarks such as the shopping areas, parliament buildings, Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), and the historic Railway station. In the evening, receive a briefing on your missionary tour. Overnight at Nairobi Safari Club or equivalent, on a bed and breakfast basis.
After breakfast, depart for Amboseli National Park, situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch followed by an afternoon game drive. Witness the park's famous elephant herds against the backdrop of Africa's highest peak. Dinner and overnight at AA Lodge or equivalent.
For the next three days, immerse yourself in providing basic health services to the Maasai communities. Your activities will include dispensing deworming drugs and distributing water purifying agents in schools and villages. Each day, you'll be divided into groups to cover different locations. Enjoy picnic lunches during your missionary work. In the evenings, return to AA Lodge or equivalent for dinner and overnight stay.
Start your day with an early morning game drive, then head to Tsavo West National Park. Visit the Mzima Springs, known for its clear waters and underwater hippo observatory. Enjoy a nature walk and picnic lunch before proceeding to the Shetani Lava Flow, a testament to the area's volcanic past. End your day with dinner and overnight at Ngulia Lodge or equivalent.
After breakfast, journey to Tsavo East National Park. Enjoy a game drive en route to your lodge, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure, offering opportunities for photography, swimming, or bird watching. Conclude your day with an evening game drive before dinner and overnight at Voi Wildlife Lodge or equivalent.
Begin with an early morning game drive, returning to the lodge for a bush breakfast. Spend the day exploring Tsavo East's attractions, including another visit to Mzima Springs and Mudanda Rock. Return to Voi Wildlife Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, embark on a final game drive as you exit the park. Proceed to either Nairobi or Mombasa, depending on your onward journey plans. Enjoy an early lunch en route, marking the end of your Basic Medical Care Missionary Tour.
While medical professionals are ideal, we welcome volunteers with various backgrounds. Basic training in health care provision will be provided before the
missionary work begins.
The focus is on deworming, distributing water purification agents, and providing basic health education. You may also assist with general health check-ups and first aid.
Numbers can vary, but typically, each group might serve between 50-100 people per day in schools and villages.
Local translators will be available to assist with communication. Learning a few basic Swahili or Maa (Maasai language) phrases can be helpful and appreciated.
In Nairobi, you'll stay at a comfortable city hotel. During the safari and missionary work, you'll experience authentic safari lodges with essential amenities and stunning wilderness views.
You have good chances of seeing elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos (the "Big Five"), along with numerous other species like zebras, giraffes, and various antelopes.
The tour is available year-round, but the dry seasons (June to October and January to February) offer the best wildlife viewing. Consider your home country's medical practice schedule when choosing dates.
The medical work can be moderately demanding, involving long hours in sometimes hot conditions. The safari portion involves sitting in vehicles for game drives. A moderate level of fitness is recommended.
