Join our impactful Health Care / Medical Volunteer Program in Kenya and make a difference in
the lives of local communities. This 18-day program offers a unique opportunity for medical
professionals and students to contribute their skills and knowledge while gaining invaluable
experience in a diverse healthcare setting.
Your transformative journey begins as you land in Nairobi, Kenya's vibrant capital. Our dedicated team will greet you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer you to your comfortable accommodation in the city. The evening is reserved for a warm welcome dinner where you'll meet fellow volunteers and receive a brief overview of the exciting two weeks ahead.
These two days are crucial for preparing you for your volunteer experience. You'll receive a comprehensive introduction to Kenyan culture, customs, and etiquette. Our experienced staff will guide you through Kenya's rich history and diverse geography, providing context for your upcoming teaching adventure. You'll also gain insights into the Kenyan education system and what to expect in your volunteer role. The orientation includes cultural sensitivity training to ensure respectful and effective interactions with your host family and the local community.
For the next twelve days, you'll be fully immersed in your role as a teaching volunteer. Each morning, you'll make your way to your assigned school, either within walking distance or a short commute from your host family's home. You'll assist local teachers with English language instruction, mathematics, and other subjects based on the school's needs and your skills. Beyond classroom teaching, you'll have the opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities, helping with sports, arts, or tutoring programs. In the evenings, you'll return to your host family, sharing meals and participating in cultural exchange, deepening your understanding of Kenyan life.
As your volunteer period nears its end, this day is dedicated to wrapping up your teaching projects and reflecting on your experience. You'll have a chance to say goodbye to your students and fellow teachers, possibly participating in a small farewell ceremony at the school. In the afternoon, you'll join other volunteers for a reflection session, sharing experiences and discussing the impact of your work.
On your penultimate day, you'll receive a certificate acknowledging your valuable contribution as a teaching volunteer in Kenya. The day culminates with a heartwarming farewell dinner, giving you a chance to express gratitude to your host family and bid farewell to the friends you've made during your stay.
As your 2-week teaching volunteering experience in Kenya comes to a close, we'll transfer you back to Nairobi airport for your departure flight. You'll leave with a heart full of memories, new skills, and the satisfaction of having made a positive impact on the lives of Kenyan students.
While formal teaching qualifications are not mandatory, a good command of English, patience, and enthusiasm for working with children are essential. Any experience in education or childcare is beneficial.
Placements are based on the current needs of our partner schools and your skills. We strive to match volunteers with schools where they can make the most impact during their 2-week stay.
Most volunteers assist with English language instruction, but you may also help with mathematics, science, arts, or physical education, depending on your skills and the school's needs.
Typically, volunteers teach for 4-6 hours per day, five days a week. This includes classroom time and participation in extracurricular activities.
Class sizes can vary but are often larger than in Western countries, typically ranging from 30 to 50 students. This presents a unique challenge and learning opportunity for volunteers.
Basic teaching materials are available, but resources may be limited. We encourage volunteers to bring some supplies and to be creative with locally available resources.
English is widely used in Kenyan schools, but you may encounter students with varying levels of proficiency. Local teachers will assist with translation if needed, and this is an excellent opportunity for cultural exchange.
Volunteers stay with carefully selected host families, providing an authentic immersion into Kenyan culture. This arrangement offers insights into daily life that you wouldn't get in a hotel.
