Experience the ultimate Uganda wildlife adventure with our Bwindi Gorilla & Lake Mburo Safari, a meticulously crafted 4-day journey combining two distinctly different yet equally captivating destinations. Begin with the profound experience of tracking endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where misty forests harbor nearly half the world’s remaining population of these magnificent primates. Then transition to the open savannah landscapes of Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s most accessible wildlife reserve and the only place in the country to observe zebras and impala in the wild. This perfectly balanced safari offers both the intense emotional connection of a close gorilla encounter and the relaxed pleasure of traditional game drives, boat safaris, and guided nature walks. With expert guides, comfortable accommodations, and carefully planned activities, this comprehensive safari delivers Uganda’s most sought-after wildlife experiences in one seamless journey—ideal for both first-time visitors and experienced safari enthusiasts seeking unforgettable natural encounters.
Your adventure begins with early morning pickup from your Kampala or Entebbe accommodation. Journey southwest through Uganda’s scenic countryside, passing traditional villages, terraced hillsides, and bamboo forests. After approximately 8-9 hours with comfort stops (optional flight available), arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to nearly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Check into your comfortable lodge nestled in the forest or perched on a ridge with spectacular mountain views. Enjoy dinner while being briefed about tomorrow’s gorilla tracking experience and the conservation efforts protecting these endangered primates.
Rise early for breakfast before transferring to the park headquarters for a comprehensive briefing on gorilla tracking protocols and behavior. Meet your tracking team of guides and porters before venturing into the ancient forest. Trek through varied terrain—from dense undergrowth to bamboo stands—as guides interpret the ecosystem and track signs of gorilla movement. After 1-5 hours of trekking, experience the profound moment of encountering your assigned gorilla family. Spend a precious hour observing these gentle giants as they feed, play, and bond. Return to your lodge for a late lunch, relax and reflect on your gorilla experience.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the misty mountains of Bwindi as you journey to Lake Mburo National Park. The scenic drive showcases Uganda’s diverse landscapes, transitioning from forested highlands to rolling savannah. Arrive at Lake Mburo by mid-afternoon and check into your lodge overlooking the acacia-dotted plains or lake shores. Enjoy a late afternoon game drive, your first opportunity to spot zebras, impala, buffalo, and numerous bird species in this compact yet wildlife-rich park. As evening approaches, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay, perhaps hearing distant hippo grunts from the nearby lake.
Begin your final day with an early morning guided nature walk accompanied by an armed ranger. This unique experience allows you to approach wildlife on foot, discover smaller creatures, and learn about tracks, plant medicinal uses, and ecosystem relationships. Return for breakfast before embarking on a boat safari on Lake Mburo, observing hippos, crocodiles, and numerous waterbirds including African fish eagles and kingfishers. After lunch, enjoy a final game drive en route to the park exit, potentially spotting zebras, giraffes, eland, and topi. Begin your return journey to Kampala, arriving by early evening.
Gorilla tracking requires moderate to good fitness, involving 2-8 hours of hiking through challenging forest terrain with steep, sometimes muddy slopes. Trek difficulty depends on which gorilla family you’re assigned and their location that day. The pace is adjusted to group ability with regular stops. Most find the effort entirely manageable and utterly worthwhile once in the gorillas’ presence. Hiring a porter (included for one) helps tremendously, carrying your daypack and offering helping hands on steep sections.
Bwindi’s gorilla tracking success rate exceeds 98%. Rangers locate families before visitors arrive, then guide you directly to them. Visitors maintain a 7-meter (23-foot) minimum distance for health safety, though gorillas sometimes approach closer out of curiosity. You’ll spend one hour with the gorillas—sufficient time to observe feeding, playing, grooming, and social interactions. The habituated families are accustomed to human presence while maintaining natural behaviors, creating authentic wildlife experiences unlike any other.
Both destinations offer year-round wildlife viewing. The optimal times are during dry seasons (June-August and December-February) when forest trails are less muddy and Lake Mburo’s wildlife congregates around water sources. Wet seasons (March-May and September-November) bring lush landscapes and fewer tourists but potentially challenging trail conditions in Bwindi. Lake Mburo remains relatively dry year-round compared to other Ugandan parks. For photography, early dry seasons offer clear skies and green landscapes.
Lake Mburo hosts 68 mammal species including impala (found nowhere else in Uganda), topi, buffalo, waterbuck, eland, the recently introduced giraffes, and numerous smaller mammals. The park excels for night drives, potentially revealing nocturnal species like genets, bush babies, and occasional leopards. Hippos and crocodiles inhabit the lake, visible during boat safaris. With over 350 bird species, highlights include African finfoot, papyrus gonolek, and rufous-bellied heron. The varied activities ensure diverse wildlife encounters despite the park’s compact size.
Our safari offers three accommodation tiers. In Bwindi, standard options include Engagi Lodge or Gorilla Mist Camp, with luxury options like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge or Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. Lake Mburo accommodations range from mid-range Rwakobo Rock or Arcadia Cottages to luxury Mihingo Lodge. Budget options are available at both locations. All provide private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, full-board meals, and strategic locations for optimal wildlife access and scenic views.
Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations specify that children must be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla tracking. This age restriction exists for safety reasons and to ensure gorillas remain calm during encounters. For families with younger children, we can arrange alternative forest activities while adults take turns tracking. Lake Mburo is extremely family-friendly, with activities suitable for all ages, making this combination ideal for families with mixed age ranges.
Gorilla permits are the limiting factor requiring advance booking—at least 6 months ahead for peak season (June-September, December-February) and 3-4 months for off-peak. During high season, permits often sell out 9-12 months in advance. Last-minute availability occasionally occurs during rainy seasons. Once permits are secured, accommodations and transportation are arranged to match. For holiday periods, booking 8-12 months ahead is recommended to secure preferred lodges.
Absolutely! Popular modifications include adding Queen Elizabeth National Park between Bwindi and Lake Mburo for classic savannah game drives and the Kazinga Channel cruise. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest creates the ultimate primate experience when added. For adventurous travelers, we can incorporate white-water rafting on the Nile near Jinja. The itinerary can be adapted for special interests like photography, birding, or cultural experiences, and accommodations can be upgraded or downgraded to match preferences.
Pack lightweight, neutral-colored layered clothing for both cool forest and warm savannah conditions. Essential items include sturdy waterproof hiking boots for gorilla tracking, garden gloves for gripping vegetation, long socks to tuck pants into, insect repellent containing DEET, and rain gear regardless of season. Camera equipment should include a zoom lens (200mm+) and sufficient memory cards. Binoculars, sun protection, and a small backpack are crucial. Pack medications, hand sanitizer, and quick-dry clothing.
Your $700 gorilla permit directly funds gorilla protection, habitat conservation, and community development. This sustainable tourism model has helped increase mountain gorilla populations from approximately 620 individuals in 1989 to over 1,060 today. Park fees at both locations support ranger salaries, anti-poaching efforts, and infrastructure maintenance. Many lodges employ local staff and support community initiatives. By demonstrating wildlife’s economic value through tourism, the safari creates incentives for conservation among local communities and national policy makers.
