Semliki National Park

Introduction to Semliki National Park
Semliki, in advance known as the Toro Reserve, lies near the northern base of the Ruwenzoris in Uganda. The rich habitat of grassland, savannah, forest and wetland is home to diverse fauna, in addition to 400 bird species and 300 butterfly species.

Location of Semliki National Park
This park, 220 kms, lies along the Congolese border following the Semliki river, within the Western arm of the Albertine Rift Valley, in the North of Rwenzori Mountains. The altitude is on the average 700 m above sea level.

Attractions in Semliki National Park
There are 336 tree species recorded, of which 24 are restricted to the Park (like Isolana Congolana and Ejacis Guineesis); 435 bird species (at least 40 of them are found nowhere else in Uganda); 63 mammals, like elephants, leopards, buffaloes (nowhere else are found flying squirrels, pygmy antelope and six types of bats); 9 primates (chimpanzee, blue monkey, vervet monkeys, baboon); at least 374 species of butterflies.

Activities in Semliki National Park
Natural walk from the headquarter at Sempaya gate down to the river Semliki, enjoying birdwatching, butterflies, flowers and trees. Moreover there are two “hot springs” (one male, one female), situated in a tract of hot mineral encrusted swamp land, where visitors see a jet of hot water and a pool of boiling water.

Access to Semliki National Park
Getting to Bundibuygo is now much easier with the completion of the road upgrade between Fort Portal and Bundibuygo. There is now a direct bus between Kampala and Bundibugyo run by Kalita Executive. The bus travels via Fort Portal where the one way fare between Fort Portal and Bundibuygo is Ushs5,000-. The bus departs Fort Portal around 15.00hrs returning from Bundibuygo daily at 07.00hrs. The bus will stop at the Sempaya Gate to Semliki National Park for those intent on visiting the park. Pick-up trucks ply the road between Fort Portal Karugutu Trading centre and Bundibugyo throughout the day departing when full.

Accommodation in Semliki National Park
For those self-sufficient there is a camp site at Bumaga inside the park close to the Park HQ at Ntandi. This site has great promise with the construction of a raised eating platform with views of the canopy forest. Currently until the construction of the new camp is complete it is possible to camp at Sempaya gate. Visitors not camping will have to consider accommodation in either Bundibuygo or Fort Portal. Banda accommodation is also proposed at this site although funding is yet to be found.
